Wait a second… camping and vegan food?

Yep, you got it. A vegan diet is the most sustainable way of eating (in terms of pure number of calories!) and it is also the safest diet in terms of bacteria growth. This tour is about alternatives -- and a vegan diet is certainly one alternative way to live that is more sustainable.

The ingredients we provide are mostly vegan and mostly organic — although while we try to ensure everything is as organic and local as possible, unfortunately that is not always possible, but we do try our best.  For the meat/fish eaters, we also provide opportunities for stops along the way at local restaurants which serve non-vegan items.

We go to great lengths to source our food as sustainable and as locally as possible.  Last summer, all of our food was sourced through a local food cooperative.

Our facilitators provide a menu and help orient riders with what is available, and where everything is located.  During the training, we divide the group into cooking crews of 3-4 people, who then cook on a rotating basis for the group.

Accommodations and Showers
Most accommodations on our tours are camping.  We mostly camp either at host farms, or campgrounds, so real bathroom facilities are almost always available.  We provide the tents, but you will need your own sleeping pad and sleeping bag.  Our tents are usually six person tents, and we usually camp with 4-5 people per tent, so there is plenty of room.  A limited number of 1-2 person tents is often available as well for ill clients.

Showers are available at about half to two-thirds of the hosts we visit, although not at every stop.  This is meant to be a rugged tour, after all!

Alcohol and Drugs
We have a zero tolerance policy on consumption of alcohol and drugs, including marijuana/pot.  There are many reasons for this policy:

  • intoxicated riders are not constructive to promoting good relationships with our hosts, and some of our hosts specifically requesting this policy.
  • alcohol dehydrates, and proper hydration is critical while biking.
  • we usually have some riders under twenty-one years old, the minimum legal drinking age in the US.
  • many of our riders simply do not like to be around drinking or smoking.
  • our vans may be searched by the authorities if pulled over.

This policy truly is absolutely zero-tolerance. Please do not come on this tour if you intend to drink or use drugs, as you will be removed from the tour and sent home.
